The Rev. George V. Coyne on the Universe

The director of the Vatican Observatory, the Rev. George V. Coyne, recently came across as a refreshingly right-on guy at a lecture he delivered to astrobiologists at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting. Coyne – a Jesuit priest with a PhD in astronomy and a comet named after him – also spoke of how the universe could only have been created by random processes, and of how his religious faith co-exists quite comfortably with his scientific pursuits.
